July Presentation - Approval Voting
At our monthly meeting this past week we were treated to a presentation by Arthur Thomas, one of our state Executive Committee representatives, on the subject of Approval Voting. Many folks don't realize that there are many different voting methods, and the way we commonly use in our political elections—known as "first past the post" or "plurality" voting—is just one alternative. And frankly, if what you want is to peacefully determine the collective will of a group of people in a way that doesn't necessarily create "winners" and "losers" and cause hard feelings and bitterness among the losers, "first past the post" is not the best choice. The two videos below give a brief introduction to the problems with first past the post and the benefits of approval voting; if you're interested in learning more, please send us a message using the form on our Contact page.
